New Antibodies Could Slow Down Aging by Destroying Old Cells—Working As a Smart Bomb With Less Side Effects

New antibodies, which could slow down aging, are now being developed by researchers at UOC (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya). They are currently working with medical experts at the University of Leicester of the United Kingdom.

A senior citizen dozes off during a meeting with U.S. Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) about Social Security at the Isabella Geriatric Center March 26, 2004 in New York City. Schumer met with the seniors to discuss new efforts including a petition drive to protect seniors from Social Security cuts following Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan’s proposed cuts in the program last month.

They said that the new antibody could act like a smart bomb that destroys old cells to slow down the aging process.

“We now have, for the first time, an antibody-based drug that can be used to help slow down cellular senescence in humans,” said the new research’s leading expert, Dr. Salvador Macip, one of the experts at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya.

He added that the new antibody treatment is based on the current cancer therapies, which are specifically targeting cancer cells’ active proteins. To give you more idea, here’s how efficient the new aging treatment really is.

New Antibodies Slow Down Aging While Minimizing Side Effects

According to PhysOrg’s latest report, these new antibodies work can identify the proteins that are on the surface of old or senescent cells.

After that, they would attack themselves into these proteins and release a drug that could remove them, thus killing the aged cells. The new antibody can do this without affecting the healthy cells. On the other hand, it also minimizes side effects.

The British government is providing antibody testing to NHS and care home staff as part of the first phase of its antibody testing programme.

Involved medical experts said that their work not only maintains the physical appearance of an individual suffering from aging. They claimed that the new antibodies could also delay various age-related diseases.

Aging is not the only medical condition that health scientists are trying to solve. In other news, over-the-counter hearing aids are expected to arrive. Meanwhile, some pediatric groups said that mental health in children should be a national emergency.

Other Anti-Aging Treatments

BioSpectrum Asia reported that pharmacological interventions are also efficient when it comes to slowing down aging.

On the other hand, this treatment also has a chance to prevent age-related medical conditions temporarily. Now, experts are suggesting new approaches that would make pharmacological treatment more effective.
